The Catholic Church will temporarily suspend public services during the new “lockdown”. This was announced by the chairman of the Bishops’ Conference, Salzburg’s Archbishop Franz Lackner, in the “Kathpress”. Further details are to be determined after talks with the other churches and religious communities, which are to take place on Monday. Masses will still be celebrated this Sunday.
The churches will remain open for personal prayer even during the “lockdown”. However, as in spring, services can only be celebrated in closed rooms and in the smallest circle on behalf of the congregation. This ensures that the Eucharist is celebrated and that the media can be used to join in the celebration. In addition, the pastoral care of the sick and dying would continue to be possible even during the “lockdown”, as is also evident from the decree of the Federal Government.
Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) had already thanked Lackner for his cooperation at the government’s press conference. The two had held a conversation before the “lockdown” was announced.
