As the eleventh country in the world, Mexico has exceeded the mark of one million confirmed coronavirus cases. According to new figures released by the Ministry of Health on Saturday (local time), 5,860 new infections with the Sars-CoV-2 virus were registered in the previous 24 hours. The total number is thus 1,003,253. 635 deaths due to Covid-19 disease were also recorded. Here the total number rose to 98,259 – the fourth highest figure in the world.
However, due to high excess mortality, the government estimates that in reality about 50,000 more people in Mexico have died in connection with the coronavirus than the official statistics indicate.
The true number of corona cases in the North American country – with almost 130 million inhabitants in 10th place among the most populous countries in the world – is also likely to be much higher, as very little testing is done there.
