Czech Republic relaxes its strict coronavirus restrictions for the Christmas business. From Thursday onwards, all retail stores and restaurants will be allowed to open again. This was announced by the government today after a special session of the cabinet. There are strict hygiene rules and a limit of one person per 15 square meters on the number of customers in stores.

So far only essential purchases are allowed. The relaxation was originally expected on Monday. In the course of the week, a “further significant improvement of the situation” is expected, health minister Jan Blatny explained the delay. The obligation to wear masks even outdoors will remain in place.

The Czech Republic with its 10.7 million inhabitants recently had one of the highest infection rates in Europe. Recently the situation has eased somewhat. Today 2,667 new cases were reported within 24 hours. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been a total of 518,649 confirmed infections and 8,054 deaths.

The transition from level four to three in the warning system as of Thursday will bring further relief. The night-time curfew will fall. Up to 50 people may gather outside and ten indoors. A maximum of 30 believers may attend church services during the Advent season. Museums and galleries may open with restrictions, but theaters and cinemas remain closed.
