Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic is tested positive for the coronavirus today. This was announced by the government spokesman Marko Milic in the evening. “At the moment he feels good. He will carry out his activities and obligations from home and follow all the instructions of doctors and epidemiologists”, the statement said. He is the first EU head of government to be infected with the virus.
Plenkovic was in home quarantine since Saturday after his wife tested positive for the coronavirus. A first test at the Prime Minister’s office had turned out negative. On the recommendation of epidemiologists, he repeated the test today and the result was positive, the government spokesman said. The Prime Minister will have to spend the next ten days in home quarantine.
Entry restrictions as of tomorrow
Croatia will introduce new entry restrictions tomorrow. Travelers from European Union countries must submit from then on with the entry a negative CoV test, which is not older than 48 hours, or let a PCR test in Croatia make and wait for the result in self-isolation, reported Croatian media. Condition-free is the entry from a European Union country or a region, which is categorized on the Coronavirus traffic light of the European Union health agency ECDC as green.
According to media reports, the restrictions will practically apply to entry from all EU countries, as there are currently no green countries on the ECDC map. As Croatian Minister of the Interior Davor Bozinovic emphasized, the Finnish island Fasta Aland is the only green region in the EU.
The transit through Croatia is condition-free, must take place however within twelve hours. Furthermore, no test obligation applies to border crossers, pupils, students, truck drivers in cross-border freight traffic, diplomats and patients who travel for reasons that cannot be postponed. The exception also applies to entry for urgent personal or business reasons.
