The mass testing of educators has not yet been fully completed. So far, 300 people, or 0.24 percent of those tested, have a positive result.

Education Minister Heinz Faßmann said in a press conference on Monday that a number of schools in the country opened up after several weeks of hard lockdown.

“School is not an operating room”
Regarding the recently valid mask obligation for pupils and teachers, Fassman says: “I receive mails from parents who strictly reject the masks for children, but without suggesting an alternative. It rings through in the mails that the danger of the coronavirus is underestimated”. But wearing masks is “the lesser remedy than closing schools”. But it was “to be handled with common sense”. Faßmann: “The school is not an operating room. If you need a break, take off your mouth and nose protector, preferably with the windows open. And you won’t wear it during the breaktime snack either”.

Faßmann commented on the school closures: “I can compensate companies for lost sales, but I can’t bring back lost time for the students.” Therefore, it is a priority that in the new year the upper classes also return to attendance classes.

Testing still ongoing
Fassman calls it “a sign of appreciation that the teachers are tested as the first professional group”. The testing is not yet completed, he says, and is still ongoing in Vienna. Two thirds of the teachers had been tested, 0.24 percent of them were positive.

Faßmann: “That doesn’t sound like much, but there are 300 people who are symptom-free and cannot now pass on the virus”.

Further tests would follow, probably in January after the Christmas break.
