Despite Corona, Austrians are more generous on Valentine’s Day than last year. On average, 72 euros per capita are spent on gifts. The trade is pleased.
Valentine’s Day 2021 is just around the corner. Many Austrians are planning to surprise their loved ones with Valentine’s Day gifts this year as well.
Together with Mindtake Research and idealo.at, the trade association has analyzed facts and figures on buying behavior in times of the Corona pandemic.
Flowers most popular as a gift for Valentine’s Day
“On average, 72 euros per capita will be spent on gifts this year, a new record. Thus Mrs. and Mr. Austrians are despite Corona around twelve euro more generous than in the previous year. Our retailers can look forward to additional revenue of around 110 million euros, which they also urgently need now in the crisis,” says Handelsverband Managing Director Rainer Will, summarizing the results.
“As in 2020, flowers and plants are particularly popular Valentine’s Day gifts in 2021 with 55 percent, followed by chocolate, chocolates and other sweets with 35 percent. The top surprises also include gift certificates, non-material gifts such as outings, alcohol, cosmetics and perfumes, as well as home-cooked meals and restaurant visits,” Will said.
As in past years, a good third of all Austrians completely forgo attention on Valentine’s Day.
Tiroler and Vorarlberger with gifts particularly generously
On average, each person in this country will spend 72 euros on Valentine’s Day in 2021, compared with just 60 euros in the previous year.
“In Vienna, the average sum is 86 euros, in Lower Austria and Burgenland 55 euros, while in Upper Austria and Salzburg it is 65 euros. The most generous show themselves this year again the Vorarlberger and Tiroler – here even gifts in the value of 100 euro are procured”, so Will.
Around one third of the Austrian population is ordering Valentine’s gifts online this year. The increase of just under eight percent can be attributed to the Corona crisis. A further third uses traditional stores in the vicinity for Valentine’s Day purchases and 13 percent go to shopping centers.
