Now that Biontech/Pfizer is delivering much faster than planned, there is positive news from the vaccination front. One million vaccine doses – before the summer – are to be delivered to Austria.
In an interview aired by Ö1-Morgenjournal on Thursday, the chancellor voiced out his optimism that vaccination in Austria can be carried out by summer 2021. “If all delivery agreements are kept, then we can offer six million people a first vaccination in Austria by mid-July. As things stand today, we have about five million people, two-thirds of the vaccine-eligible population, who want to be vaccinated. And that means we can meet this target we have set ourselves,” the chancellor said Thursday morning.
This forecast is supported by a vaccination forecast by mathematician Niki Popper. According to information from Ö1-Morgenjournal, 65 percent of those under 65 could receive their first vaccination by the end of June, and 100 percent of all older people. This would correspond to almost three quarters of the vaccinated population.
Vaccination for all earlier than planned?
The optimistic forecasts are also confirmed by other sources. In the summer, everyone who does not belong to a prioritization group should be vaccinated. With the additional vaccine doses, it would be possible to make an offer to these people 14 days to three weeks earlier than previously planned, said Katharina Reich, Director General for Public Health to Ö1 – i.e. already in June instead of July.
