Africa needs at least 20 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine in the next six weeks to ensure timely administration of second vaccinations, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). “Africa needs vaccine now,” WHO Africa Director Matshidiso Moeti stressed yesterday. To ensure immunization against the coronavirus, she said, it is central that the vaccination interval of six to 12 weeks is adhered to.
In addition to the 20 million AstraZeneca doses for those already vaccinated for the first time, a total of 200 million CoV vaccine doses would be needed in African countries to immunize 10 percent of the African population against the Covid 19 pathogen by this September, the WHO statement added.
Across the African continent, 4.7 million CoV infections and nearly 130,000 Covid-19-related deaths have been detected as of the middle of this week.
