The ÖFB team manages a 3:1 win against Northern Macedonia. It is the first ever win at a European Championship.
Austria celebrated its first win at a European Championship finals against Northern Macedonia in Bucharest and the hoped-for successful start to the EURO with a 3-1 win.
With David Alaba as the head of defense of a three-man backline, with Xaver Schlager, Konrad Laimer and Marcel Sabitzer as a triangle in central midfield and with Christoph Baumgartner as an offensive mind to support Kalajdzic. Finally, all players were allowed to take their usual positions from the clubs.
Initially, the Austrians had more possession, but faced the problem of finding playful solutions against the opponent’s dense formation. After a quarter of an hour, Sabitzer hinted at not finding a place to play, Alaba loudly discussed the build-up to the game with goalkeeper Bachmann.
In the 18th minute, Austria’s fans cheered when Lainer volleyed a fantastic interchange pass from Sabitzer to make it 1-0 and become Austria’s third European Championship goal scorer after Vastic and Schöpf.
The closer it got to the end, the more you got the feeling that only a lucky punch could bring victory. Joker Gregoritsch provided it, this time winning the duel with Dimitrievski after Alaba’s cross and tapping in to make it 2-1 (78th). In the finish North Macedonia had to expose the defense, Arnautovic took advantage with the 3:1 in the 89th minute.
