Hungary has largely lifted a border closure imposed in September last year over the Corona pandemic. People can enter Hungary by land from any neighboring country except Ukraine without conditions or restrictions, according to a decree issued by Prime Minister Viktor Orban that appeared in the Hungarian Official Gazette late Tuesday night. It came into force immediately after its publication. The border closure applied mainly to tourists.
There were numerous exceptions for business travelers, commuters, diplomats and athletes. Tourist entries by plane, however, are still not possible.
Regardless of the free entry now granted, commercial overnight stays for tourists are still not possible. This does not apply to people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19 in one of the 17 countries with which Hungary has concluded agreements on mutual recognition of the respective vaccination certificates. Among them, however, there is no Western country.
With the lifting of the border barrier, the border controls at the internal borders of the Schengen area, which were introduced last September will be abolished. This had already been announced by Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto the previous week. This concerns the borders with Austria, Slovenia and Slovakia.
The government in Budapest justifies the relaxation in travel with the recent significant decrease in the number of infections with the coronavirus.
