On Friday, the government held a press conference to announce how it will proceed in the coming weeks in light of the current Corona situation. Despite numbers rising again and the delta mutation continuing to spread, it was announced Friday: The agreed roadmap will be adhered to.

Specifically, “The 3G rule will remain in place as scheduled.” But there will be further opening steps on July 22.

From this date, the mask requirement will fall in large parts of the trade. Kurz explains that from then on, the mask requirement will only apply in public transport and in stores for daily needs, i.e. supermarkets, banks and gas stations.

Recently, a slight increase in the number of new infections has been observed in Germany. However, the rapid spread of the delta variant – which is already dominant – is causing concern. The proportion of delta cases is already over 60 percent.

According to experts, more than 90 percent of cases can be attributed to the delta variant by the middle to end of July.

Against this background, the traffic light commission only announced on Thursday that it expected a fourth Corona wave in Austria “with a high probability”. At this point, it was only unclear when it would arrive and how intense it would be.

According to the chancellor and co., however, this was to be expected. Especially among younger people, the infection figures would go up. Around 32 percent of all cases recorded last week were in the 15-24 age group.

In addition to the social behavior of the young, this is also due to the “extremely high vaccination coverage rate” among the older population group, he said. For this reason, he said, the federal government wants to focus on low-threshold vaccination services in the future.

Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein described the delta variant on Friday as the greatest challenge and now urged the population to get vaccinated. 40 percent of Austrians are already fully immunized – that is 45 percent of the vaccinated population.

In a European comparison, Austria is in the first third of countries in terms of vaccination coverage. In this country, around 84,000 vaccinations are currently carried out every day, with more second vaccinations being administered than first vaccinations. However, if the vaccination pace slows, then the situation could worsen again.

Although a fourth wave is expected, he said, a system overload like there was last year is almost impossible – assuming the vaccination rate is around 80 percent of the June level. If the vaccination rate is only 60 percent of the June level, the likelihood of a system overload is also low.

However, if the vaccination rate is reduced to 40 percent of the June level, a significant increase in the incidence of infection and a correspondingly higher risk of inpatient strain can be expected.
