Anyone landing at an Austrian airport from the Netherlands, Spain or Cyprus as of Aug. 3 will have to be extra vigilant – according to an amendment to the entry regulation.

At the airport, proof must be provided that one has been fully vaccinated, has recovered from a Corona infection in the past 90 days, or has tested negative for PCR.

If none of these proofs can be provided, “registration shall be made and a molecular biology test shall be performed immediately at the airport,” the amendment states. If “due to special circumstances” a PCR test cannot be done “without delay” at the airport itself, there is the possibility to make up for it within 24 hours. This test is then to be controlled by the competent district administrative authority.

According to the Ministry, “special circumstances” exist if the testing station is closed or there is a particular rush to it. This also includes excessively long waiting times with small children. If passengers refuse a PCR test, they face an administrative fine of up to 1,450 euros.

Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein does not want to rule out the possibility that this special provision could be extended to other countries. “The situation in other travel countries relevant to Austria is constantly being evaluated,” he said in response to a KURIER inquiry. The main criterion “used for the decision on the entry regulation is the incidence.” The regulation remains limited to airports, since controls on entries by land are “hardly feasible from an organizational point of view”.
