As of midnight, mandatory testing is again in effect when entering Germany. This is to prevent further spread of the coronavirus after the summer vacations. All people over the age of twelve must provide proof of 3G (vaccination, certificate of recovery or negative test result) when entering the country. Air passengers were already subject to this obligation, but now the requirement also applies to travel by car or train.

There are exceptions for border commuters, professional travelers or day trippers who stay only 24 hours in Germany. According to a statement on Saturday, the province of Tyrol is already preparing for possible backlogs due to the new controls. At the same time, with a view to returning German holidaymakers in Italy, for example, it was emphasized that the state’s free test offer was only available to locals and Tyrolean vacationers.

In case of a stay in areas with new, worrying virus variants, a test proof is obligatory. Proof as a recovered or vaccinated person is not sufficient in this case. In addition, there are now only two categories instead of three for global areas with higher infection risks: High-risk areas and areas where new virus variants of concern are circulating.
