In Austria, under 45 years old s are currently responsible for more than 80 percent of new infections, with 45.9 of all newly infected people under the age of 25. Among seniors, however, there are virtually no new infections anymore.
45.9 percent of new coronavirus infections in the previous week affected children, adolescents and young adults who are under the age of 25. That’s according to a breakdown by individual age groups by the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) of the 3,316 SARS-CoV-2 infections officially confirmed between July 26 and August 1.
Thus, the coronavirus continues to capture primarily the young. The 15- to 24-year-old group alone accounted for 37.9 percent of all new cases in the previous week. The seven-day incidence in this age group was 133.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. By comparison, the seven-day incidence rate for the entire population in Austria is currently 37.1.
In this context, the below-average vaccination rate among adolescents and young adults is striking. While 67.21 percent of the vaccine-eligible population in Austria – individuals who have already celebrated their twelfth birthday – have currently received at least a first injection and 59.26 percent are fully immunized, the proportion of fully vaccinated 15- to 24-year-olds is well below 40 percent: 36.36 percent of girls or young women and 35.45 percent of boys or young men in this age group are fully immunized, 51.25 of girls and 49.99 percent of boys have received a first injection against Covid-19.
Children hardly vaccinated
Virtually no uptake of Corona vaccination has occurred among girls and boys between the ages of twelve and 15. Among schoolgirls and apprentices, 3.73 percent have been vaccinated at least once so far, and 1.51 percent are fully immunized. Among boys, the figures are 3.82 and 1.55 percent, respectively. However, there are comparatively few Corona infections in this age group – 188 new cases were registered in the previous week in the six- to 14-year-old group, accounting for 5.7 percent of all new infections. Young children up to age five contributed 76 new cases, or 2.3 percent, of the infection incidence.
82.5 percent of infections in people under 45 years of age
Looking at the current AGES figures, statistically speaking, people over the age of 45 currently have a fairly good chance of not contracting Corona, although it is likely to play a significant role that the willingness to be vaccinated increases with age. 82.5 percent of all detected infections most recently affected people under 45 years of age. The proportion of infected people older than 65 accounted for just 3.7 percent last week.
Seniors almost vaccinated
That the Corona vaccination has taken hold among seniors is made clear by the Department of Health’s vaccination dashboard. The percentage of fully protected vaccinated 65- to 74-year-olds is currently 78.44 percent for women and 79.98 percent for men. Among 75- to 84-year-olds, the figure now holds at 83.84 percent for women and 87.24 percent for men. Of seniors older than 84, 82.7 percent of women and 91.45 of men are fully immunized.
