Researchers have evaluated 172 studies on coronavirus and thus identified the best protective measures.

According to a new overview analysis, a combination of distancing, a mouth-nose-mask and eye protection could prevent corona infection in the best possible way. This is what researchers from the Canadian McMaster University wrote in the journal “Lancet” after systematically evaluating 172 studies.

One part of the studies dealt with sars-CoV-2, another with SARS and a third with MERS. All these pathogens belong to the corona viruses.

In their analysis, the Canadian scientists came to the following main conclusions: A distance of one meter or more is associated with a much lower risk of infection than if a smaller distance is maintained (2.6 percent versus 12.8 percent risk of infection). Every additional meter of distance up to three meters could further halve this risk, although the authors describe the evidence for this statement as “moderate”.

Masks and visors

Visors, goggles and glasses in general also seem to reduce the risk. There is an assumption that the eye may be a possible entry point for the virus. Here, however, the evidence is rather “limited”, according to the authors.

A similar result is shown for the effects of face masks. Here too, however, the authors assess the overall certainty of proof as rather “low”.

However, the authors stress that spacing, face mask and eye protection – even in combined form and correctly applied – do not guarantee one hundred percent protection, but should always be supplemented by other measures such as regular and thorough hand washing.
