According to a government representative, the leadership of Belarus will release all demonstrators who were arrested during protests this week today. Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Barsukov told journalists in Minsk.
The protests had been sparked by the controversial re-election of authoritarian long-term president Alexander Lukashenko. At least two demonstrators were killed, thousands were taken into custody.
The opposition once again accuses Lukashenko of electoral fraud, and in the West, too, there are massive doubts about the official election results. A special meeting of EU foreign ministers is scheduled today to discuss possible sanctions.
