The US Democratic presidential candidate designate, Joe Biden, has called for a nationwide masking requirement in the coronavirus crisis. From now on, every single American should wear a mouth and nose protector in public, at least for the next three months, Biden said yesterday in Wilmington (Delaware).
He and his deputy candidate Kamala Harris had previously been briefed by experts on the coronavirus pandemic. “Every governor should make it mandatory for people to wear a mask,” Biden demanded. Experts estimate that this could save at least 40,000 lives in the next three months.

One of the most important issues in the election campaign
A politically charged debate is taking place in the USA about the wearing of a mouth and nose protector. US President Donald Trump had shown himself without a mask for a long time at public appearances, despite a corresponding recommendation by the US health authority CDC. Now he is also promoting this and has meanwhile performed several times with a mask. Due to the dramatic spread of the virus, masks are now mandatory in the majority of states.

“This is not about your rights, but about your responsibility as Americans,” said Biden. A nationwide mask requirement would allow the country to get back on track more quickly, he said. “Be a patriot. Protect your fellow citizens.”

The coronavirus pandemic is one of the most important campaign issues. More than 5.2 million infections have been confirmed in the US. Harris again complained that more than 165,000 people have already died in the USA in connection with the Covid-19 disease, for which she had blamed Trump the day before. She promised that a government led by her and Biden would ensure the expansion of testing capacity and the recruitment of 100,000 Americans for contact tracing. Every American should also be guaranteed access to safe and effective vaccination, Harris said.
