18 September, 8.30 AM – The number of new infections in only 24 hours has again risen enormously throughout Austria.
808 new infections with SARS-CoV-2 have been reported in Austria in the past 24 hours. The number of active cases is clearly on the rise – at 7,447, this figure has increased by 1,253 within three days. Hospitalizations are also increasing.
On Friday there were 334 patients in hospital nationwide. That was 15 more than the day before. Intensive care was required for 62 patients, seven more than on Thursday. Within a week, this was equivalent to an increase of 51 percent – starting from a low level – as Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) noted with concern: “We are now at a fork in the road. Either we will manage to keep the development stable by consistently implementing the new measures, or there is a threat of a change to exponential growth by the end of September”.
The number of deaths associated with the coronavirus also jumped. In the past 24 hours, five people – two in Styria and three in Vienna – have died infected with the virus. The number of fatalities thus rose to 763.
