China has joined the global COVAX initiative to promote the development and equitable distribution of affordable coronavirus vaccines. It is an important project for China to make Covid-19 vaccines a “global public good,” said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying in Beijing today.
The participation of leading vaccine developer China is an important step for the COVAX (Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access) initiative. According to the UN, more than 150 countries are already participating in the worldwide project – but not the USA. The World Health Organization (WHO) as well as the vaccine alliances GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations) and CEPI (Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations) are in charge.
The aim of the initiative is to develop vaccines and make them available to countries most affected by poverty – and at an affordable price. The Chinese foreign affairs spokeswoman said China wants to focus on “ensuring that developing countries have equal access to appropriate, safe and effective vaccines”.
