The coronavirus is spreading in Europe. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of new coronavirus infections per day in Europe has for the first time risen above the 100,000 mark. The WHO graph updated on Friday shows an increase of 109,749 cases compared to the previous day. On Thursday almost 99,000 new cases were reported. In Europe, the virus has been spreading continuously since August.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the public health authorities in Germany reported 4,516 new corona infections within one day on Friday. From Wednesday to Thursday, the figure had risen considerably from 2,828 to 4,058. According to RKI, at least 314,660 people in Germany have been demonstrably infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the corona crisis.

According to the RKI, the number of deaths in Germany in connection with a corona infection was 9,589, eleven more than the day before. Around 271,800 people survived the infection according to RKI estimates. A significant increase is apparent in the number of Covid-19 patients undergoing intensive care treatment. According to the current RKI situation report, 487 corona infected patients received intensive care on Thursday, 239 of whom were ventilated. One week before (1.10.) the value was 362 (193 ventilated), the week before (24.9.) 296 (166 ventilated). Around 8,500 intensive care beds are currently still available in German hospitals.

The number of new infections in Italy exceeded the threshold of 5,000 cases on Friday. The authorities counted 5,372 new infections within 24 hours. In addition, 28 new Covid-19 deaths were registered. For some days now, the numbers have been rising more strongly than in the weeks before in the country that was a corona hotspot in the spring of Europe at the beginning of the pandemic. In total, Italy now has almost 344,000 infections and more than 36,100 Covid-19 deaths.

The number of new infections with SARS-CoV-2 is thus as high as last March. However, many more people are now being tested for the virus. There are also significantly fewer people in intensive care units: almost 400. And far fewer patients die. There were particularly many new infections on Friday in Lombardy in the north and in Campania in the south.

In Great Britain, almost 14,000 corona infections were reported within 24 hours. The total number of infections thus rose to more than 575,000, as the government announced in London on Friday. However, experts expect a high number of unreported cases – partly because there is a lack of tests. 87 people died of Covid-19 disease within one day. The north of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of Wales are particularly hard hit by the pandemic. Hospital beds are already becoming scarce. According to the statistics authority, there are about 58,000 deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

However, three weeks after a nationwide lockdown, there are signs of a declining trend in new corona infections in Israel. As the Ministry of Health announced on Friday, 3,692 new cases were recorded the day before. About one and a half weeks ago, a record number of more than 9,000 infections had been registered. At the beginning of the week, more than 5,700 new cases had been reported. The rate of positive tests was eight percent according to Friday’s data. In the course of the lockdown, it had been well over eleven percent in some cases. Israel has about nine million inhabitants, about 500,000 less than Austria.

With 850,000 infections, Spain is the country in Western Europe most severely affected by the pandemic. The most recent figure for new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was 115. In the region of Madrid, the figure was as high as 230. Only the region of Navarre has a higher so-called 14-day incidence in Spain.

In Poland, the number of new corona infections has reached a record level for the third day in a row. On Friday, the authorities recorded 4,739 new infections within 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health in Warsaw. In the same period 52 people died in connection with the virus.

In view of the increasing number of infections, masks will once again be compulsory in public places throughout the country starting Saturday. In addition, only a maximum of 75 people are allowed to participate in celebrations. In so-called red zones with very many infections, the regulations are even stricter: here bars and restaurants must close at 10 p.m. Since the beginning of the pandemic, at least 116,338 people in this country of 38 million inhabitants have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 according to official figures. 2,919 people have died.
