Germany extends the border controls to Austria again by half a year. This was decided by the German Minister of the Interior, Horst Seehofer (CSU), in coordination with Austria, the German Ministry of the Interior announced today in Berlin. The decision was made for “migration and security policy reasons”, it was said.

The controls have been in place since the fall of 2015, after tens of thousands of refugees and other migrants from Greece had made their way to Western Europe via the Balkan route. They have nothing to do with the current coronavirus crisis.

Actually, in the Schengen area, which includes 26 European countries, there are no stationary border controls for people. In recent years, however, several countries have made use of an exemption and have partially reintroduced border controls. The current border controls were in place until 11 November. The German government must report a further extension of six months to the Brussels EU Commission, which the Ministry of the Interior has now done.
