Belgium is still not getting a grip on the coronavirus figures and has decided today to strongly intensify measures. Starting next week, all “non-essential” businesses will close, said Prime Minister Alexander De Croo at a press conference. Several media had previously reported on the measures.
The blockade will remain in place at least until December 1, when the measures will be evaluated. Schools must also close until mid-November for the time being. “Our country is in a state of emergency,” said De Croo.
In addition, social contacts will also be further restricted. In one’s own home friends and family may no longer be invited, and each week one may only have close contact with one person outside one’s own home, reports RTBF. Hairdressers and similar professional groups must also stop working.
Belgium is the country most severely affected by the pandemic, according to the European Disease Control Center ECDC. According to the ECDC figures, Belgium currently has a 14-day incidence of 1,600 – for comparison: in Austria, according to the ECDC, this figure is 400.
