Health Minister Rudi Anschober (Greens) today again appealed to the population: “Please reduce your contacts with immediate effect! A third less contacts halves the risk of infection”. And this is exactly what is urgently needed now in view of the rapidly increasing number of infections.
The current package of measures, which has been in force since Sunday, would achieve its dampening effect in just over a week. It would make the minimum distance legally binding, greatly expand the mandatory use of MNS and drastically reduce unregulated events.
“Nevertheless, we must and will have to adopt and anchor comprehensive and highly effective additional measures in the shortest possible time,” announced the department head.
The sharp rise in the number of infections is also causing the reserves in intensive care units to melt down. If this trend continues, the capacity limit would be reached in mid to late November. For this reason, he said, major additional measures would be needed over the next few days to flatten out the current drastic increases.
Medical association sharply criticizes Anschober
The Austrian Medical Association (ÖÄK) today criticized Anschober and his handling of the CoV crisis unusually sharply. It is completely incomprehensible, why there are still no clearly comprehensible country wide defaults for measures in the health range, so vice-president Harald Mayer in a transmission. The ministry should have worked out all this in the summer, as well as a functioning and uniform contact tracing system.
“The people, on whose trust the success of all pandemic measures largely depends, deserve clear and transparent decisions,” Mayer said. “Further confusion and announcements will certainly not achieve this”. He therefore believes that the new measures to be announced tomorrow are a challenge for the Minister of Health.
“Valuable time wasted”
Specifically, Mayer criticized the fact that tests prior to operations are sometimes handled differently within individual hospital operators, as well as the different ways in which infected persons are counted. “Instead, valuable time was wasted and a traffic light was built where it is still not clear what the consequences of the traffic light colors are and what criteria are used to determine how it works”. The pandemic situation had reached a decisive point, “the minister must not allow himself any further mistakes now”.
ÖVP demands “an immediate end to party political games
Meanwhile, ÖVP Secretary General Axel Melchior demanded an “immediate end to party-political games” in a statement. The current exceptional health and economic situation requires immediate non-party solidarity, “because it is clear that the virus knows no color.
