Although the corona virus has put a damper on Christmas markets – at least for now – Vienna wants to spread at least a little pre-Christmas flair.
That’s why Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and Vienna’s head of the Economic Chamber Walter Ruck switched on the traditional Christmas lightsrecently at Stock-im-Eisen-Platz in the city center. 31 shopping streets will remain appropriately decorated until January.
The costs for the lighting will be borne jointly by the city, the chamber and the businesses via the shopping street associations. “In these very challenging times, the festive lighting should above all radiate confidence and hope. It is important that – despite all adversities – people are not deprived of the joy of the Christmas season,” Ludwig was quoted in a broadcast.
