The British Parliament yesterday evening voted for strict new pandemic-related restrictions after the end of the nationwide lockdown in England. The government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson received enough votes for its plan to reintroduce the three-tier system, despite considerable resistance from within its own ranks. This system continues to impose strict restrictions in areas with the highest coronavirus warning level.

The curfew, which has been in force for a month, ends at midnight. Johnson’s Conservative government can now impose regional restrictions again, depending on the coronavirus numbers in each region of England.

Strong support for Johnson
The vote ended with 291 votes in favour and 78 against. Before that, however, there had been clear opposition from 55 conservative members of parliament to their head of government. Johnson thus experienced the strongest headwind since he took office a year ago. The renegade MPs accused the government of not being able to sufficiently justify the hoped-for success of their plans.
