No more red zones in Italy – Appeals for tough lockdown in Germany

Italy – Due to falling coronavirus numbers, restaurants and bars in many regions of Italy will be allowed to reopen from tomorrow. Around five weeks after the establishment of three risk zones and a partial shutdown, the time of the red zones is then over for the time being.

Lombardy in the north and Calabria in the south, which were initially severely affected, are now even back in the low-risk yellow zones. Health Minister Roberto Speranza had also ordered in Rome that Abruzzo, as the last red zone, will change to the medium orange category.

This will temporarily make everyday life a little easier for many Italians. This is because in the yellow zones – unlike in the other two risk areas – restaurants are allowed to reopen during the day. And people there can once again leave their homes freely. In Italy as a whole, however, bars and restaurants must continue to close to patrons at 6:00 pm. And from 10 p.m., there is a curfew until early morning, for which there are only a few exceptions.

Meanwhile in Germany, the signs are pointing to tightening. A day before a federal-state crisis summit, leading politicians today stressed the need for stricter coronavirus requirements. One must be prepared “for a hard lockdown,” said Winfried Kretschmann (Greens), prime minister of Baden-Württemberg.

Everyone must expect the hard lockdown to begin “as early as next week, where we will largely shut down social life,” Kretschmann said at a digital state party conference of the southwestern Greens.

“The way it’s shaping up, it will come before Christmas and not just at Christmas.” Kretschmann said he had prepared the meeting with other state premiers and German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) before his speech. It was about “very far-reaching, very drastic decisions,” Vice Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) also said.
