The Ministry of Health expects the fixed Covid-19 vaccination strategy to be implemented as prepared. A first delivery of vaccine from Biontech/Pfizer is expected at the beginning of January, and then the vaccine will be started in nursing homes and homes for the elderly as planned, Covid-19 special representative Clemens Martin Auer stressed today. The only question, he said, is marketing approval from the EU – but where Auer expects it to be granted as expected.
It is not yet possible to say exactly when the first shipment of vaccine will arrive. The approval for Biontech/Pfizer is expected at the end of December, beginning of January. Soon thereafter, i.e. at the beginning of January, Auer expects 250,000 vaccine doses from this company. Because two vaccinations are required, 125,000 residents and employees of nursing homes and old people’s homes can then be vaccinated in the first phase.
Second delivery in the course of January
The next delivery is expected soon after in January – 200,000 doses from Moderna. This will allow immunization of health care workers in hospitals, ordinations, etc., and of high-risk groups.
The third tranche of vaccine should come from Astra Zeneca – where Auer expects approval “in the first quarter.” With about two million vaccine doses, it will be possible to move to the second vaccination schedule phase – and offer vaccinations to all persons over 65 and those at systemic risk in education, security, justice and critical infrastructure.
