More than 30,000 new infections with the coronavirus were registered in Germany within one day for the first time on Thursday. Health offices reported 33,777 infections. The number of deaths reached 813, the second highest since the start of the pandemic, following 952 corona victims last Wednesday. The new infection figure includes 3,500 subsequent reports. But even without those, there were still 30,277 new infections within 24 hours.
The late reports came from Baden-Württemberg. The numbers could not be transmitted the day before for technical reasons. Last Friday, the previous peak in new infections had been reached with 29,875.
The number of daily deaths had been trending upward recently, which was also expected after the steep rise in new infections. The total number of people who have died in Germany from or involving a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 24,938 by Friday.
The Robert Koch Institute counts 1,439,938 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the pandemic began. According to estimates, about 1,069,400 people have since recovered.
The seven-day incidence – the reported new infections per 100,000 population within seven days – which is crucial to assessing the situation, rose to an all-time high of 184.8 on Friday, up from 179.2 on Thursday. The German government’s goal is to push the incidence below 50.
A hard lockdown has been in effect across Germany since Wednesday. A large part of the stores are closed. Schools also largely shut down, in Kitas there is only emergency care. The measures are limited for the time being to January 10. On January 5, the federal and state governments are expected to discuss whether the rigorous restrictions will be extended.
