Those who still have to get Christmas presents, groceries, a Christmas tree or the like on Christmas Eve still have a few hours to do so. Last-minute gifts can still be shopped for on December 24, 2020.
Shopping on December 24, 2020: Regularly only until 1:00 p.m. (13 Hours)
In general, the legal basis for the opening hours of stores on December 24 is the Vienna Opening Hours Ordinance or the special regulations contained therein. Since 2019, this has changed somewhat – working hours until 14:00 are now no longer permitted on 24 December.
In principle, stores in general trade may be open from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm on December 24, 2020. However, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., only absolutely necessary closing work is permitted; no sales may take place – stores must close at 1:00 p.m.
Confectionery, flowers, Christmas trees: still available longer
Exceptions exist only for the sale of confectionery and natural flowers, where opening is permitted from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, and for the sale of Christmas trees, where opening is permitted from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm.
If you still need a Christmas tree – on the Facebook page of the Vienna Market Office you can find info on the 282 Vienna Christmas tree sales locations 2020. However, pharmacies are only open until 12 a.m. on December 24 (here you can find all night pharmacies that are still on call after that).
On December 24, 2020, some supermarkets open their doors earlier, but close at 13:00 at the latest.
