The plan announced by the federal government in early December to provide the elderly population with free FFP2 masks to combat the Corona pandemic is now slowly getting underway. The first masks were sent out on Dec. 23 and delivered on Dec. 24, the health ministry said Monday. Until all those affected are supplied, however, it will take until the third week of January.
It is planned to distribute ten such masks to a total of 1.7 million people over the age of 65. The masks will be sent directly to households by Austrian mail to minimize potentially health-threatening contacts for those over 65. The goal is to better protect the elderly population against coronavirus. FFP2 masks provide a higher level of protection than simple mouth-to-nose protection. The simple MNS mask is primarily used to protect other people.
After the dispatch of the “first tranche” of FFP2 masks on December 23, further tranches will now be mailed this week – starting on Monday. “In the third week of January, this process will be completed,” according to information from the office of Health Minister Rudolf Anschober.
