The second round of the coronavirus vaccination campaign began in Vienna on Wednesday. Another 15 facilities will be supplied by January 12. A total of about 5,000 doses are to be handed out.

The vaccines will be administered mainly in senior or nursing facilities, as well as in covid wards in hospitals. In “Wien heute, Heinz Stieb head of the pandemic board at the city’s retirement homes said that 60 to 80 percent of residents and 50 to 70 percent of employees are currently interested in vaccination.

After the second round is completed, Vienna plans to apply it to a broader group of people starting January 12. For example, certain occupational groups, such as paramedics, will be targeted. Elderly Viennese who do not live in a care facility are also to be vaccinated.

Vienna plans to set up a platform for vaccination
Subsequently, all city residents will gradually be given the opportunity to be vaccinated. For this purpose, there is to be a special pre-registration platform as of January 18. Anyone who registers there will be recorded in the system. As soon as there is clarity about the further procedure, the preregistered persons will receive appointment proposals.

Around 2,000 portions of the vaccine have already been administered in Vienna. The first people were vaccinated on Dec. 27, as in other provinces.

63,000 vaccine doses per week

Recently, there has been criticism from several sides about the delayed start of vaccination in Austria. The main criticism was that there are more vaccine doses in Austria than are being vaccinated. Chief Medical Officer Reich had justified the action on Tuesday with the “logistical challenge” and emphasized that one is “exactly in the plan”.
