The first major vaccination campaign against the coronavirus will start in Vienna on Friday. Around 11,000 people are expected to receive their first jab over the next four days at Messe Wien. The majority of these doses are reserved for physicians in private practice and their staff. But also personnel of emergency services and mobile care as well as some midwives will be immunized at the total of 14 vaccination lines.
There had been great interest among the target groups in the appointments to be made in advance. For example, the 8,500 slots reserved for physicians and office staff were fully booked within 24 hours. Parallel to the campaign at the trade fair, the vaccine is still being administered in Vienna’s hospitals and retirement homes. After that, over-80s outside care facilities and high-risk groups will be targeted. The vaccination is scheduled to start in mid-February. From today’s perspective, sufficient vaccines for the general public will not be available until the second quarter.
