In Germany, indications of a possible new intensification of the Corona pandemic have increased. After the so-called reproduction number had been below one for weeks, it has now exceeded this important threshold again for the first time, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). This gave the so-called seven-day R-value on Friday evening with 1.01. This means that 100 infected people mathematically infect 101 other people.

This could indicate that the more infectious virus variants are spreading more rapidly despite the lockdown, concludes the RKI. Within one day, public health departments in Germany reported 9,164 new Corona infections to the RKI. That is 9.7 percent more than last Saturday (8,354).

RKI President Lothar Wieler had said Friday that the proportion of the virus variant B 1.1.7. which, according to conservative estimates, is 35 percent more contagious than the original virus variant, is increasing rapidly in Germany. “We may be at a turning point again. The downward trend of recent weeks is apparently no longer continuing,” Wieler said.
