The incidence of infection in Germany continues to level off: both the number of new coronavirus infections and the 7-day incidence are significantly below the values of the previous week. The reproductive number is increasing slightly, but remains well below 1.0.

Health departments in Germany reported 18,485 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. This is according to figures released by the RKI on Friday morning, which reflect the status of the RKI dashboard as of 05:10. By comparison, the figure a week ago Friday had been 24,329. According to the RKI, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported within seven days was 125.7 nationwide in the morning (previous day: 129.1; previous week: 153.4).

Across Germany, 284 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours, according to RKI data. Exactly one week ago, there were 306 deaths. The RKI counted 3,491,988 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the pandemic began. The actual total is likely to be much higher, as many infections are not detected. The RKI gave the number of those who recovered as about 3,128,800. The total number of people who died from or with the involvement of a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 84,410.

The nationwide seven-day R value was 0.88 (previous day: 0.83), according to the RKI situation report released Thursday evening. This means that 100 infected people mathematically infect 88 more people. The R-value represents the infection incidence 8 to 16 days ago. If the R-value is below 1 for a longer period of time, the number of infections is decreasing; if it is continuously above 1, the number of cases is increasing.
