In terms of new infections, the European Anti-Disease Agency expects the delta variant to dominate soon. To prevent a new wave, the EU Commission is urging member states to increase vaccination as well as “targeted policy measures.”

Faced with the spread of the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus, the EU Commission has called on EU states to “redouble their efforts” on vaccinations. “For the unvaccinated and only partially vaccinated, the delta variant is a real threat,” EU Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides told Die Welt. Until higher levels of secondary vaccination are achieved, she said, everything must be done to break the chain of transmission of the delta variant.

“This means redoubling our efforts to vaccinate the population and respecting public health measures,” the EU health commissioner said. She also said further “targeted policy action” should be taken if needed.

“It is absolutely essential that we get fully vaccinated,” Kyriakides said. It’s not enough to get vaccinated just once, he said, when full protection requires two doses of vaccine. By summer, the delta variant of coronavirus is expected to be dominant, he said. “We need to take this seriously and act now to prevent a new wave of covid.”

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) expects the delta virus variant to be responsible for 90 percent of new corona infections in the EU by the end of August. The EU agency estimates that the variant, first detected in India, is 40 to 60 percent more infectious than the alpha variant first identified in the UK.
