Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) and Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) today issued an appeal for vaccination to those under 35 years of age.
The current infection figures prove “that due to the vaccination progress there has been a massive shift in the incidence of infection from the higher age groups, which are particularly at risk, to younger age groups,” they said in a statement.
According to the latest report by the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), the proportion of “new infections in the past seven days among the particularly vulnerable over 65-year-olds” is only five percent, “while 70 percent of new infections now affect the under-35 group.”
“Vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate!”
“The solution in the fight against the pandemic is only: vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate! Therefore, we call especially on young people in the country: Please get vaccinated! As the Delta variant spreads, you are the age group most affected. Vaccination protects against the delta variant,” the Chancellor and Minister of Health said.
“We are now in a position where we can offer vaccination to anyone who wants it. There is more vaccine than people willing to be vaccinated. Therefore, take the time, make an appointment to be vaccinated and protect yourself from the virus! The infection figures prove it: you are better protected with a vaccination,” Kurz said.
Says Mückstein, “In order to maintain the opening steps, we need to fight the delta variant together now.” Full vaccination protection is particularly effective for containment, he said. “My appeal is therefore: please also attend the second vaccination appointment and continue to get tested regularly until then! The first vaccination does not provide complete protection against disease.”
