More than 211 million people have tested positive for the virus worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 4.4 million infected people have died. About 4.9 billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide.

The economic downturn in the wake of the Corona crisis may have resulted in the deaths of more than 260,000 babies last year alone, mainly in poorer countries around the world. This is the conclusion reached by experts from the World Bank in a modeling study presented in the journal BMJ Open. According to the study, there are several underlying mechanisms: poorer care and nutrition in impoverished households, restricted access to health services, and impaired offerings and dwindling quality of health services in the wake of the economic crisis.

In London, dozens of anti-vaccination activists invaded the headquarters of the ITN news channel on Monday (Aug. 23) in the wake of protests against the Corona measures. A video posted on the Internet shows a news anchor being berated by protesters as he entered the building. According to Deutschlandfunk radio, an ITN spokeswoman said journalists had been prevented from going about their work. Employees had been instructed to either stay in their offices or not enter the building at all until the situation calmed down. The police eventually made sure that the demonstrators left the building again.

New York City introduces mandatory vaccination for teachers. This was announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio on Monday (23. 8.), as reported by the news agency Bloomberg. It is a decisive step to protect children and contain the pandemic. The regulation is to apply from the end of September. Previously, teachers who did not want to be vaccinated had to undergo weekly tests. According to local authorities, 63 percent of school personnel have been vaccinated so far.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday (Aug. 23) granted full approval to Pfizer/Biontech’s Covid-19 vaccine, which received emergency approval in December. This makes it the first vaccine to receive such an endorsement from the FDA. Health officials hope this will convince more unvaccinated Americans that Pfizer’s vaccine is safe and effective. The reluctance of some Americans to vaccinate has complicated the fight against the pandemic in the United States. Pfizer/Biontech’s vaccine is now being marketed in the U.S. under the name Comirnaty, according to the FDA.
