In a Zeit im Bild 2 interview (ORF 1) Medical Association President Thomas Szekeres pleads once again that vaccination in Austria must be pushed further. Several million Austrians are still unvaccinated, he said. “The only way to get out of the pandemic is to vaccinate.”

Mask, 1G and distance
If it doesn’t work out with the vaccinations – “I’m an optimist and hope it works out” – it will be necessary to take further measures, he said. The physician leader advocates both mandatory masks indoors, safe distance and 1G rule at events and night catering. “That’s the only way to try to break the chains of infection.”

New lockdown?
Vaccination is “of course” a voluntary decision, but especially night gastronomy, events are places where you can easily get infected “and this should be prevented and only vaccinated people should be allowed to such events.”

ORF moderator Margit Laufer asks: Do we need a new lockdown? The president of the medical association draws a devastating conclusion: “If we don’t succeed in reducing the numbers, it will be necessary in the fall”.
