Once a week, the city of Vienna surveys the age distribution of new infections. According to the current figures (as of Thursday, September 16), 9 percent of new cases were among 0 to 9-year-olds, while 10 to 19-year-olds accounted for 23 percent. After that, the numbers decrease steadily, with the 30-39 age group accounting for 17 percent of new infections, 40-49 year olds 14 percent, 50-59 year olds nine percent, 60-69 year olds four percent, 70-79 year olds and 80-89 year olds two percent. The 90-99 year olds account for one percent of the statistics.

In summary, the 4th wave is primarily a wave of the young. Every second new infection affects those under 30, and about one-third affects those under 20. The fact that the younger ones are more often affected by Corona due to the often still pending vaccination is also evident in the schools.

Currently (as of Monday, September 20), 411 classes at 335 schools in Vienna were in Corona quarantine. However, not a single school was completely closed. Among kindergartens, 82 kindergarten groups at 58 locations are in quarantine. Thus, the numbers are lower than in previous weeks since the start of school. For example, only last week about 600 classes were in quarantine, we reported.

The reason for this is the new regulation of the federal government, which makes it possible for K1 persons (i.e., direct seat neighbors of ill students) to be released after only five days (instead of ten days previously). This means that fewer children are affected by self-isolation for less time.
