Numbers of CoV deaths and new infections in Russia reached new highs over the weekend. According to data released today by the official CoV staff in Moscow, 962 people died of or with Covid-19 within 24 hours in the world’s largest country by area.

The previous day, there had been 968. These were the highest levels since the pandemic began. The number of new infections each day is slightly less than 30,000 cases daily.

The official CoV figures in Russia have long been criticized as being embellished. The portal Zona.media, which is critical of Kremlin, just pointed out again that Russia’s statistics office reported nearly 50,000 CoV deaths (49,389) for August. The government staff, however, cited less than half that number – 24,661 deaths.

Only Russian vaccines approved
Russian authorities believe the main reason for the high death and infection rates is the population’s reluctance to be vaccinated. Western vaccines the ones produced by Moderna and Biontech and Pfizer, which have the widest international distribution, are not approved in Russia.

The Russian leadership insists that people get the vaccine “Sputnik V,” developed by Moscow researchers, or others of its own five vaccines. “Sputnik V” is recognized as a vaccine by about 70 countries, but not by the European Union and the United States. Many Russians also do not trust the vaccines developed in their own country.
