Thomas Szekeres, president of the Austrian Medical Association (ÖÄK), recommended on Tuesday to take the Corona third vaccination as early as possible.

“Unfortunately, everything we warned about in the summer has come true – the covid infection figures are rising, with the reservoir of unvaccinated people acting as a motor for the pandemic. Intensive care units are also filling up again and surgeries are having to be postponed,” Szekeres summed up.

“Now every vaccination can be crucial,” the ÖÄK president said. “Please get your third vaccination as early as you can. It is an essential part of basic immunization,” Szekeres appealed to those who have already been vaccinated, especially physicians and health care workers.

He said figures from Israel show that after two doses, vaccination protection declines after six months and a third vaccination becomes necessary. “Equally, however, the figures there also show that the third vaccination re-establishes reliable vaccine protection.” In addition, experts would expect a long-term effect after the third vaccination.

Unvaccinated expected to contribute to pandemic response
Unvaccinated people would now be called upon to make their contribution to fighting the pandemic: “We need solidarity in our society now. Solidarity with the people who, in addition to the sick themselves, are suffering the most from the pandemic: Hospital staff, doctors and all representatives of the healthcare professions who have been doing superhuman things for months to maintain our healthcare system. They all see so much suffering that could be avoided through vaccination. We must not let these exemplary people foot the bill for this pandemic now,” said Szekeres.

In addition, he said, there are patients waiting for surgeries that have to be postponed due to lack of capacity. “Vaccination still provides excellent protection against severe courses. By doing so, you are protecting yourself and those around you. In addition, you are helping to ensure that we all finally emerge from this pandemic together,” Szekeres emphasized.
