Sebastian Kurz’s withdrawal from all his political posts has triggered a round of resignations within the People’s Party government team. The new chancellor and party leader will be Karl Nehammer, the previous minister of the interior.
“I was unanimously appointed today in the party executive committee as executive party chairman and at the same time also as a candidate for Chancellor,” he announced following the federal party executive committee. This was a “great honor” and a “privilege”, because the People’s Party as a movement has been for him for a very long time, “which has always fascinated me”.
Nehammer wants to “actively shape politics” and “hold the lines” of the ÖVP when it comes to migration and security. Three basic values are important to him: responsibility, solidarity and freedom.
The ÖVP is a party that “works into the future without forgetting the foundation of values.” He had great respect for Kurz’s decision, the future chancellor stressed: “I thank Sebastian Kurz for ensuring a good transition in such a caring and benevolent way.” But Nehammer also thanked interim Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg: “He was willing to take on responsibility in a very challenging situation, to serve the Republic in the truest sense of the word. I am very grateful to him for that.”
