Government extends lockdown on unvaccinated for ten days. The 2-G rule for restaurants, hotels and retailers remains in place. Special regulations apply on December 24, 25, 26 and New Year’s Eve.
Christmas is approaching and with it the question of how it may be celebrated – due to the pandemic. The answer was given by Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) and Family Minister Susanne Raab (ÖVP) on Friday.
- The lockdown for the unvaccinated will be extended for another ten days. The 2-G rule (vaccinated against the coronavirus or recovered from Covid) for gastronomy, hotel industry and trade will remain in place.
There will be exceptions on December 24, 25, 26, and 31: Unvaccinated people will be allowed to attend gatherings of no more than ten people on those days. For larger gatherings of eleven to 25 people, valid 2-G proof is needed. - The Covid curfew on New Year’s Eve will be lifted – individual curfew regulations in the states will apply here.
- Singing will not be allowed at Masses in churches.
It is known so far that the Omicron mutant is more easily transmissible than the delta variant of the virus that has prevailed so far. It is also clear that there are currently 75 cases in Austria, with suspected Omicron cases at two schools. In a European comparison, that is low, the Health Minister said.
