The new Omicron variant of the Cornavirus is also spreading rapidly in Spain. In the capital region of Madrid, it already accounts for more than 30 percent of all new infections, the newspaper El Pais reported today, citing doctors.
In the tourist metropolis of Barcelona, the figure is 25 percent, regional Health Minister Josep Maria Argimon told the newspaper La Vanguardia. Omicron is expected to be dominant there by Christmas.
A similar development was also reported from other areas of Spain. In Navarra in the north of the country, the 7-day incidence of 720 is the highest in Spain.
However, because of the comparatively high vaccination rate of around 90 percent of all citizens over the age of twelve, the situation in hospitals is not as dramatic as in other countries.
Denmark closes theaters, cinemas and museums
In light of rising new coronavirus infections, the Danish government plans to further restrict public life. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced today that museums, theaters, cinemas, zoos, amusement parks and event venues are to close. In addition, vaccination and testing is to be stepped up. The parliament’s pandemic committee approved the measures this evening. They are to take effect at 8 a.m. Sunday and last for four weeks.
In Denmark, with a population of 5.8 million, 11,194 new coronavirus cases were reported today. More than one-fifth of those accounted for the omicron variant, Frederiksen said. A total of 11,559 Omicron cases have been detected in Denmark since the end of November. 518 people have been hospitalized. “We need to hit fewer people and keep our distance,” the government leader appealed.
Restaurants will remain open, but will not be allowed to serve alcohol after 10 p.m. and will have to close at 11 p.m. Last week, the government had already decided to send schoolchildren on Christmas vacation a week earlier.
