December 24 falls on a Friday in 2021 – which means that the two Christmas holidays fall on the weekend. In Vienna, there are still some opportunities to go shopping or get gifts on Christmas Eve.
Those who still need to get Christmas gifts, groceries, a Christmas tree or the like, still have a few hours to make the stores unsafe on December 24, 2021.
Shopping on December 24, 2021: Regularly only until 1:00 p.m.
In general, the legal basis for the opening hours of stores on December 24 is the Vienna Opening Hours Ordinance – or the special regulations contained therein. Since 2019, something has changed in this regard – working hours until 2:00 p.m. are now generally no longer permitted on December 24.
In principle, stores in general trade may be open from 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on December 24, 2021. From 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., however, only absolutely necessary closing operations are permitted, and no sales may take place – stores must close at 1:00 p.m.
Confectionery, flowers, Christmas trees: still available longer
Exceptions exist only for the sale of confectionery and natural flowers, where opening is permitted from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, and for the sale of Christmas trees, where opening is permitted from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm. Pharmacies are only open until 12 a.m. on December 24.
On December 24, 2021, some supermarkets open their doors earlier, but close at 13:00 at the latest. Exceptions are, as so often, stores at train stations and at the airport.
