Compulsory vaccination will come into force from the beginning of February for everyone aged 18 and over. Unvaccinated also face automated penalties.
On Sunday, the federal government presented the draft law on compulsory vaccination against the corona virus. Compulsory vaccination for everyone 18 years and older is to take effect in February. There are exceptions for pregnant women or for medical reasons.
The bill will be discussed today, Monday, in the Health Committee of Parliament in the National Council. In the afternoon, at 2 p.m., the committee will then start with a public hearing with experts in parliament, and in the evening the decision is expected with the votes of ÖVP, Greens, SPÖ and NEOS.
However, it will still take time before unvaccinated persons will be penalized. If one cannot show the vaccination proof with a control of the police, one gets the penalty starting from 16. March. 600 euros must be paid then with a penalty order. People who do not comply with the vaccination requirement can be fined a maximum of four times per calendar year.
Further tightening possible
If these vaccination controls should not be sufficient however, still another intensification is possible, as the government clarified on Sunday unequivocally. For example, Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) stated in her statement:
“If it is necessary, the (note tightening) can be put into force – also with a decree of the federal government and with a decision of the main committee – that here automation-supported penalty orders can be issued.”
Means in the plain text: also automated penalties are possible! As soon as the ELGA can make the data comparison possible, all unvaccinated receive a reminder letter. If it is epidemiologically necessary, the 3rd phase comes into force. Anyone who does not have a valid vaccination certificate by a certain deadline will automatically receive a penalty.
