Austria – The National Immunization Panel (NIG) has updated its recommendations for using Covid-19. Accordingly, high-risk individuals and people 65 and older may be offered a second vaccination at the earliest six months after the third vaccination if high daily case numbers and virus circulation are necessary. In principle, a fourth vaccination is currently not approved and not generally recommended for immunocompetent persons.
However, people who are expected to have a shorter duration of vaccination protection, for example, due to immunosuppression or age, should receive a further vaccination in some instances. Before this, an individual risk-benefit assessment by the physician is necessary, and the vaccination is carried out at the individual’s request (“off label”).
Regarding vaccination of pregnant women, the NIG stated that an mRNA vaccine should be administered in the second or third trimester, depending on the vaccination status. Extensive studies have shown no increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes. Preference should be given to Comirnaty because it has the most comprehensive data. Spikevax is also possible from the age of 30.
