According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 600,000 additional people were displaced in Ukraine in the first 17 days of April. This brought the total number of displaced people since the war to more than 7.7 million, or 17 percent of the population. At least 60 percent of those fleeing are women.
More than half of the people displaced inside Ukraine complain of a lack of certain food items. According to UN data, more than five million people have left their country.
Ukraine: 200,000 refugees expected in Austria
Due to the Russian offensive in Eastern Ukraine, Refugee Coordinator Michael Takacs expects the next strong wave of refugees soon.
He assumes that Austria will take in up to 200,000 displaced persons, and he said on Wednesday evening that the country is preparing for this contingent. So far, 230,000 of the 277,000 Ukrainians who have entered the country have continued their journey, mainly to Portugal, Spain, Italy, and Germany.
Currently, about 60,000 refugees are accommodated in Austria, mainly in private quarters.
Meanwhile, Takacs informed that 47,000 displaced person cards had been printed in Austria, and 40,000 had been sent out. This blue card is a prerequisite for social lines and access to the labor market. Refugees who registered with the police automatically receive this card. The AMS has received 1,800 job offers for Ukrainians.
