Of a spread of the Omikron subvariant, BA.5 of the Coronavirus in Germany warns the chairman of the World Medical Association, Frank Ulrich Montgomery: “Corona is not over yet – that proves the violent outbreak of Omicron in Portugal,” Montgomery told the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday).
BA.5 will also spread in Germany, he said. Many people – including vaccinated people – would fall ill. However, vaccinated people would have much milder symptoms.
Omicron subvariants on the rise
The Robert Koch Institute recently reported an increase in omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 at a low level. BA.2 continues to dominate with 96.4 percent. The proportion of BA.5 approximately doubled from 1.2 to 2.5 percent. German Health Minister Karl Lauterbach had also already spoken out with a warning. “The particularly contagious variant BA4/BA5 is also on the rise in our country. This could be the next wave in the fall,” the SPD politician wrote on Twitter.
