More and more people are living to a ripe old age. Unfortunately, the aging process cannot be stopped. Still, everyone can influence their lifestyle to enjoy the later years of life with the best health and vitality. After all, what is the point of reaching a ripe old age if you no longer feel well and vital?
There are numerous ways to turn back the biological clock. Many years ago, for example, a co-founder of the “trim yourself” movement in Germany said: “A person can stay 40 years old for 20 years if he exercises regularly”.
Today we know too well that increasing physical fitness is an important measure to maintain muscle mass and mobility even in old age, to train the cardiovascular system, and, among other things, to prevent old-age depression.
Active anti-aging measures also ensure adequate sleep and stress management during the day. Because if stress takes on excessive proportions and can no longer be balanced out, it develops into a natural “lifetime predator.” It would help if you did everything in your life to be in harmony with yourself. The joy of life and mental balance is essential to one’s vitality, and social contacts should not be underestimated.
Suppose you want to change your lifestyle to prevent the typical diseases of old age. In that case, you should pay attention to a healthy diet and limit your consumption of stimulants. The free radicals from cigarette smoking damage the body’s cells and, thus, all cell and vascular systems. They increase the risk of arteriosclerosis, attack the respiratory tract, and increase cancer risk. Externally, they promote the formation of wrinkles. Alcohol and coffee consumed in excess also accelerate the aging process.
An unbalanced diet has a fundamentally negative effect on life expectancy. The optimal diet should be rich in fiber, and vital substances since vitamins, minerals, trace elements, and secondary plant substances perform essential bodily functions. A sufficient supply of critical substances can also make a necessary contribution to the prevention of cancer. To counteract the well-known diseases of civilization at an early stage, the proportion of fat in the diet should not be too high. They should consist primarily of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids.
There is no button with which aging can be switched off. However, we should use the many available “wild cards” to get closer to everyone’s goal: To grow old while staying young!
